Why Do I Write?
Foremost, I write out of obedience to my Savior and King, Jesus Christ. More specifically, I write to inform, enlighten, encourage, equip, rebuke, correct, and instruct in righteousness via analytical commentary and personal testimony concerning God’s active involvement in the world. And most importantly, writing—including all of the supporting research, contemplation, and prayer—is a prominent aspect of my worship of Christ.
Having an overactive and inquisitive mind since birth, inquiry and exploration have driven me to research, contemplation, and prayer toward the discovery of “how and why things work.” In my earliest years I learned of such “mysteries” as tree ring formation, the water cycle, how birds could fly, how ducks could float, and how cookies were made. These lessons taught me the joy of explanation and understanding, which increased my appreciation of any given subject.
Additionally, in my earliest years I learned to value the power of story in that my parents read to me often. Exposure to the adventure, suspense, and gallantry found in the classic literature of Arthurian lore, Robin Hood, Treasure Island, and Robinson Crusoe fostered in me a deep yearning to live my own adventure and unearth the mystery of why “adventures” were so appealing. And so I devoured fiction and nonfiction books (and movies and documentaries) in my quest to realize what my own story might be.
In my twentieth year I came to realize I had been wandering aimlessly for a few years after a few desirable life-directions had not panned out. I had even begun drafting an unofficial follow-up to The Lord of the Rings titled The Fourth Age and the Peace of King Elessar… to no avail!
Though my upbringing was blessed by a loving family, extended church family, and splendid families all around, and though my faith in God was strong, my relationship with God was weak. As was the adventure in my life, for there was no spirit for want of the Spirit. Thus I appealed to the One who could resurrect my circumstance; and He did.
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8).
